The existing surface is excavated and cleared to the required depth, typically 150-200mm for both block paving and gravel driveways. Any necessary drainage or utilities are accounted for at this stage to ensure proper water flow.
Sub-base installation
A strong sub-base, usually made of crushed stone or hardcore, is laid and compacted to provide a stable foundation. This step is crucial for the longevity of both block paving and gravel driveways, preventing sinking and shifting over time.
Edging installation
Edging or kerbs are installed to define the borders of the driveway, ensuring a neat finish and helping to hold the driveway material in place. For block paving, the edging helps keep the blocks secure, and for gravel, it prevents the stones from spreading.
Laying the surface
Block Paving: The chosen blocks are carefully laid in the agreed pattern. A layer of sharp sand is used beneath the blocks to ensure they are levelled and tightly fitted. Gravel: A layer of weed membrane is laid first to prevent weed growth, followed by the spread of gravel evenly across the driveway, at a depth of 50-100mm, depending on preference.
Compaction and finishing
Block Paving: Once the blocks are laid, a vibrating plate compactor is used to ensure they are firmly in place. Kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints between the blocks, securing them further and preventing movement. Gravel: The gravel surface is raked and compacted to create a smooth, even finish.
